Gustavian and Swedish Antique Chairs
Dating back to the Rococo period in the 1700's, Sweden produced a wonderful variety of chair shapes with wonderful curvy carvings and ballon backs.
The Gustavian period from the late 1700s produced a number of chair styles that we still see today including Ax, Bellman, Leksand, Farmers Rococo, Swedish Louis xvi, Rose. Gripsholm, and more.
The 1800s chairs will have been handmade, upholstered with horse hair and featured wooden lugs holding the parts together whereas those from the early 1900s onward would have screws underneath.
Carver Chairs will have padded backs and be ornately carved often with gold gilt trimming.
